About us
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) was first formed by a group of volunteers in 1903 and officially registered in 1921. Although we are the first charity in Hong Kong to deal with all aspects of animal welfare, we obtain only 1% of our funding from the Government. The rest of our funding comes from the generosity of the general public. Despite limited resources, we continue to launch new initiatives to improve animal welfare and meet a growing and diverse societal demand. We offer a one-stop service for animal welfare ā from rescue, medical services, rehabilitation, adoption, post-adoption services to education. Our Mission "End animal cruelty, alleviate suffering, and protect the health & welfare of all animals across Hong Kong through actions, advocacy and education." Our Vision "Creating ONE HONG KONG where all animals are treated with compassion and respect."

šSPCA Hong Kong Urges for Animal Welfare in New Pork Production Plans Ā Farmers in Hong Kong are facing significant challenges due to government development plans, leading to the loss of farmlands. In response, the government has plans to build an intensive, multi-storey pig farming facility in Sheung Shui, aimed at housing at least 5,000 pigs in the limited space.Ā Ā Ā Ā These intensive farms, while designed for maximum production, often lack essential provisions for animal welfare. There are no requirements to implement animal welfare elements into the building or address welfare concerns in the tender process for construction, raising concerns for the treatment of these sentient beings in the long-term.Ā Ā Ā Animal welfare is recognised as a global goal by the UN, yet Hong Kong's current legislation permits practices that cause suffering like tail docking and teeth clipping without the use of medication or veterinary oversight to continue, and the lack of a codes of practice or formal guidance is concerning.Ā Ā Key factors for pig welfare include good stockmanship, spacious environments, enrichment and good biosecurity. Unfortunately, the proposed farms will likely restrict pigs' natural behaviours, leading to increased stress and health risks.Ā Ā We call for a stronger commitment to animal welfare in agriculture, ensuring that farming practices align with humane treatment and sustainability. š¾Ā Ā Ā #AnimalWelfare #PorkProduction #SPCAHK #SustainableAgricultureĀ
