How do kids cope when cancer hits home?

A parent's cancer diagnosis can be a deeply traumatic experience for children. Many feel they are to blame, and their carefree childhood often ends abruptly. Enno and Sabrina share how they're coping with her illness.

When Sabrina Schwerer was diagnosed with incurable liver cancer, she chose to speak openly with her son Enno. With support from the Flüsterpost association, they learned to express their emotions and face fears together.

In Germany, around 50,000 children are affected when a parent is diagnosed with cancer each year — and often, they go without adequate psychological support. Honest, age-appropriate communication helps prevent long-term emotional distress.
